Project Name: Guidelines and tools to enhance the resilience of schools in the Maldives
The project will enhance school resilience in the Maldives by strengthening Ministry of Education (MoE) guidelines to ensure safer, climate-adaptive, and culturally appropriate school design and construction.
A Resilient Schools Toolkit will be developed to empower administrators in independently managing school infrastructure, improving monitoring, communication, and reporting with the MoE.
Best practices from the project will be shared with Small Island Developing States (SIDS), supporting school resilience initiatives in similarly vulnerable regions.
Lead Agency: Ministry of Education
Impact
1
The project will integrate resilience into government policies and regulations, ensuring every new school building in the Maldives—serving over 94,000 children—is designed to withstand climatic hazards and future demographic challenges.
2
Inclusive infrastructure will be prioritized, with technical guidance supporting safe learning environments for over 3,400 children with disabilities, addressing disparities in school attendance and promoting accessibility across all genders and abilities.
3
The project will strengthen climate resilience practices across public and private sector buildings, enhance centralized infrastructure reporting for the Ministry of Education, and raise national awareness of climate-adaptive educational facilities.
