Strengthening Resilience of the Energy Sector to Disasters in Vanuatu

Implementing Partner: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

Project Name: Strengthening resilience of the Vanuatu energy sector against climate-induced disasters

The project will strengthen the resilience of Vanuatu’s energy infrastructure, reducing risks and enhancing energy security for communities vulnerable to frequent climate-induced disasters.

Key activities include a capacity needs assessment for disaster risk reduction in the energy sector and the development of a national Strategic Plan for resilient energy systems.

The project will also produce climate-resilient technical design guidelines for hydro and solar PV systems, ensuring sustainable and adaptive energy solutions for Vanuatu.

Impact

1

The project will enhance the climate resilience of decentralized renewable energy systems in rural Vanuatu, minimizing supply downtimes during disasters such as cyclones and floods while strengthening community capacity to withstand climate-induced disruptions.

2

Reliable electricity will drive agricultural value addition, improve healthcare, water, and public safety services, and generate enterprise and employment opportunities—particularly benefiting women and vulnerable groups across island communities.

3

National and local energy stakeholders will gain lasting expertise in integrating resilience into infrastructure design, bolstering investor confidence and advancing climate-smart energy policies, plans, and future programmes.
