Strengthening Critical Infrastructure Resilience in the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Haiti

Implementing Partner: United Nations Development Programme

Project Name: Strengthening Capacities, Security and Resilience of Critical Infrastructure in Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Haiti

This project will equip infrastructure professionals from the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Haiti with the skills to assess and enhance the resilience of schools and water systems against a range of hazards.

Utilizing a shared methodology, they will identify vulnerabilities, create retrofitting action plans, and implement strategies to strengthen key infrastructure sites, including a few school buildings.

Additionally, a regional deployment mechanism will be established to facilitate rapid post-disaster assessments and coordinated reconstruction efforts, bolstering preparedness and recovery across the Caribbean.

Impact

1

Forty-five evaluators will assess 33 critical infrastructures—21 schools and 12 water facilities—creating resilience plans to bolster education and water systems in Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti, promoting stronger disaster preparedness and climate adaptation.

2

The project will directly benefit 20,010 individuals and indirectly impact 117,000 through enhanced early warning systems, functional infrastructure upgrades, and awareness initiatives addressing climate risks and disaster preparedness.

3

Two regional exchange events and improved coordination will foster institutional synergies, strengthen disaster response efforts, and support long-term resilience planning while promoting South-South cooperation within national risk management systems.
