Global Study on Disaster Resilience of Airports

Implementing Partner: Build Change

Project name: Airports Infrastructure Resilience (Global Study on Disaster Resilience of Airports)

This global study on airport infrastructure resilience under the Transport Initiative examines disaster risks affecting airports, assessing resilience strategies and risk management practices.

Phase 1 analyzes perceptions of stakeholders across 111 airports in 54 countries, highlighting the need for periodic vulnerability assessments.

Phase 2 evaluates resilience and financing mechanisms in 13 airports across 12 countries, aiming to develop an airport risk index.

The findings will guide comprehensive recommendations for disaster risk management and long-term resilience in airport infrastructure.

Impact

1

The study underscores the growing vulnerability of airports to climate extremes, highlighting the need for periodic risk assessments. Findings reveal that only 13% of assessed airports conduct regular evaluations, emphasizing gaps in resilience planning.

2

By analyzing disaster impacts and stakeholder perceptions, the study provides evidence-based recommendations for integrating resilience into airport infrastructure. It advocates data-driven risk management, systematic financing, and planning to enhance preparedness against extreme weather disruptions.

3

Phase 2 aims to create an airport risk index, assessing interdependencies and investment challenges. These insights will support informed decision-making, ensuring long-term resilience and adaptive strategies for future airport infrastructure.
